When Weight Loss Surgery Might Be Right for You

Weight loss surgery is a procedure that involves the removal of excess skin and stubborn pockets of fat that won’t go away following weight loss.

Unlike liposuction, weight loss surgery isn’t meant to remove large amounts of fat tissues. Instead, our specialist at Lancaster Plastic Surgery, Dr. Richard M. Levin, smooths out contours and removes excess skin.

Below, we asked our expert to explain when weight loss surgery may be a good solution for your aesthetic concerns.

Areas targeted by weight loss surgery

Good candidates for weight loss surgery often have excess skin or stubborn pockets of fat in the following areas:

You can also eliminate small amounts of fat from these areas by combining your weight loss surgery with liposuction.

What happens during weight loss surgery?

Dr. Levin makes incisions and uses ultrasound-assisted liposuction to remove unwanted fat tissues.

Once the ideal contours are achieved, Dr. Levin pulls the skin taut, removing excess skin, and he closes the incision using either sutures, adhesive, surgical tape, or a combination of these options. You’ll then be closely monitored until your anesthesia wears off.

Who’s the right candidate for weight loss surgery?

The ideal candidate for weight loss surgery is someone who is close to their ideal weight but has some excess skin and stubborn pockets of fat that won’t respond to diet or exercise.

People who smoke or have conditions that may slow down the healing process, such as diabetes, may not be a good candidate for the surgery.

If you’re taking any medications or suffering from a chronic medical condition, share your concerns with Dr. Levin, as he may be able to temporarily switch you to other medications so you can undergo weight loss surgery.

Some chronic diseases may also allow surgical interventions as long as there’s evidence that you have them under control.

Finding out what procedure matches your cosmetic goals

It may be difficult to determine what surgical procedure works best for you, but under the guidance of Dr. Levin, you’ll get all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Dr. Levin will listen to your aesthetic concerns and outline what procedures or treatment can address those concerns. He’ll also outline the risks and benefits, and he’ll explain what results you can expect to see after the procedure.
