Pros and Cons of Weight Loss Surgery

Pros and Cons of Weight Loss Surgery

Weight loss surgery is an umbrella term used by Dr. Richard M. Levin, our expert at Lancaster Plastic Surgery, to describe procedures intended to improve the contours of the body following significant weight loss.

Often, dieters end up disappointed by their weight loss results in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Certain problem areas may continue to store excess fat, while other areas may be affected by loose skin.

Dr. Levin understands how frustrating it can be to put so much effort into your weight loss journey without being able to fully enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Are you considering improving the aesthetics of your curves after losing weight? We asked Dr. Levin to prepare a short guide on the pros and cons of weight loss surgery.

Pros of weight loss surgery

Genetics and hormones play a significant role in the way fat is distributed throughout your body. If you’ve lost a lot of weight but still have stubborn pockets of fat in certain areas, dieting and exercising alone won’t help.

Dr. Levin can fix this issue by using ultrasound liposuction to remove fat from the abdomen, lower back, upper legs, and arms. Ultrasound liposuction has a shorter recovery time than traditional liposuction. Most patients fully recover within two weeks after the procedure.

Low self-esteem is a common issue among dieters who’ve lost a lot of weight and have excess skin. Plastic surgery that involves the removal of excess skin is shown to increase self-esteem in patients and allow them to live happier lives.

Recovery after removing excess skin can take up to a few months, but the results will last a lifetime.

Cons of weight loss surgery

Because of the invasive nature of weight loss surgery, not everyone is a good candidate. Patients who suffer from blood clotting disorders, smoke, or have uncontrolled diabetes may not be able to undergo the procedures.

Patients who aren't at stable weight aren’t good candidates either. These procedures aren’t meant to be used as a weight loss tool, but as a way to contour the body after losing a significant amount of weight.

Another con of weight loss surgery is the recovery time. If you aren’t able to take time off from work to heal, you aren’t a good candidate.
