Botox or Dermal Fillers? Which is Best for You?

Botox or Dermal Fillers? Which is Best for You?

Anti-aging treatments have come a long way. Today, patients can erase wrinkles and add volume to their faces without facing cosmetic surgery.

Botox® and dermal fillers are now widely used to rejuvenate the skin at any age. They can delay or completely eliminate the need for surgical intervention.

Below, we asked Dr. Richard M. Levin, our expert at Lancaster Plastic Surgery, to explain the differences between Botox and dermal fillers. Read on to learn about their uses, and find out how to decide which one is best for your cosmetic goals.

Understanding Botox

Botox is a type of injectable used to soften fine lines and wrinkles caused by muscle contractions.

As we age, our bodies become less efficient at producing collagen and elastin, which causes our skin to lose elasticity. Each time we smile or frown, the skin on our faces stretches a bit, and when collagen and elastin levels are lower, this stretching leads to fine lines and wrinkles.

Dr. Levin uses Botox to fix the problem of wrinkles caused by facial expressions. Botox partially paralyzes the muscles responsible for these expressions.

When these muscles can no longer respond as much, the skin can’t go through a cycle of stretching hundreds of times per day. The relaxation of these muscles allows the skin to recover, and it softens the wrinkles.

Dr. Levin recommends Botox to soften wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows, on the top of the nose, around the eyes, around the lips, and around the chin.

Understanding dermal fillers

Instead of treating wrinkles caused by stretching of the skin due to muscle movements, dermal fillers treat wrinkles caused by loss of volume in the face.

As we age, our facial bones, muscles, and fat deposits shrink. This causes the skin that sits on top of these structures to sag.

Dr. Levin uses dermal fillers to fix wrinkles such as the deep lines that go from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial fold). Also, he uses dermal fillers to fill in areas on the face that appear to be flat and hollow, such as the forehead, temples, cheeks, and under eyes, and he uses dermal filler to add volume to the lips.
